“The Passion of the Christ”

 

Day 1. – Arrival in Matera and accommodation in hotel or B&B. Typical dinner in a restaurant in the downtown. Overnight stay.

 

Day 2. - – 10 AM: Guided tour of the ancient Sassi district, which has been included in the  UNESCO World Heritage List since 1993.  Due to it’s similarity with the 2000 year old Jerusalem,  the Sassi have been chosen by Mel Gibson as the location for his latest movie the Passion of the Christ. Other important religious movies have been shot here, such as “The Gospel according to St. Matthew” by Pasolini and King David starring Richard Gere. During the tour you will be able to see grottos, inhabited since Prehistoric times; frescoed Rupestrian Churches; dwellings and cellars, all carved out of the rock; as well as Romanesque and Baroque churches. During this guided tour you will visit the actual locations where they shot the scenes of the Market, the Gates of Jerusalem, the Last Supper, the Madonna’s house and Jerusalem dwellings.  Thus, you will walk along the same paths as the actors of the movie did.

In the afternoon, transfer to Craco, a ghost village used as the location of the scene of Judas’ plot and hanging.

Day 3. - 10 AM A few miles trip on a shuttle bus to get to the Rupestrian Churches Park, where you will visit some of them. There are more than 150 churches, completely carved out of the rock, many of them frescoed, dating back to the 13th century AD. You will experience the natural and wild environment of the Gravina Canyon, facing the Sassi and you will stand on the exact site of one of the most impressive scenes in the movie: the Crucifixion.
