4 days tour to discover Unesco sites in Puglia and Basilicata: Alberobello, Castel del Monte and Matera.
Independent arrival to Matera and get settled in at your hotel in the Sassi district. Afternoon guided tour in the Sassi, completely dug out in the rock. Stroll along the paths and over the roofs of the dwellings of the old districts, also well known as sets to very famous films (The Passion of Christ by Mel Gibson, The Gospel According to Saint Matthew by Pier Paolo Pasolini, and so on). Dinner in a typical restaurant. Overnight stay.
Transfer to Castel del Monte, the finest castle in Europe, built by Frederick II around 1250 as a hunting residence (Frederick was keen on hunting with falcons). The castle is famous for its octagonal structure. Each of its sides measures 16.50 m; its geometric harmony depends on the fact that there are eight 25 metre octagonal towers. Transfer to Trani to visit the wonderful romanesque Cathedral and for a walk in the amazing downtown on the dock. Back to Matera in the evening, dinner on your own and ove night stay.
Light walk in the Park of Rock Churches, which witnessed Greco-Byzantine monastic cultures and were important crossroads for different civilizations over several centuries. Transfer to Alberobello, a little town in a glorious setting of olive groves, vineyards and stonewalled fields and terraces stands. Its collection of stone buildings, the “trulli”, is unique. The trulli are limestone dwellings, remarkable examples of drywall (mortarless) constructions, a prehistoric building technique still in use in Puglia. The trulli are made of roughly worked limestone boulders collected from neighbouring fields. Characteristically, they feature pyramidal, domed or conical roofs built irpoouf of corbelled limestone slabs. Dinner on your own and overnight stay in a Trullo B&B.
Breakfast and end of our services.
